In this cute story we head back to fifteenth century Turkey.
"Angora" which means "Ankara" in Turkey is an ancient
Turkish breed of long haired cat. According
to Turkish legend a hero there named "Kemel Ataturk" will one day be
re-incarnated as a solid white angora cat.
The angoras' were almost extinct until the Ankara Zoo rescued them.
This is how "Sugar" my cat came into existence.
Sugar is pure white with rabbit like softness to her long silky hair.
She has a long bushy tail she often wags like a puppy when she's happy.
She also has two very odd appearing eyes.
One blue eye and one amber eye that sets her apart from most other
breeds. She is gentle, sweet and
very responsive. She is affectionate, loyal, alert and very intelligent.
She is what I consider the ideal indoor house cat and is quite content
being just that.
She walks with grace throughout the house with her tail held high like
she's the queen of her castle. Kids'
love watching "Sugar" in action.
She knocks on the doors with her paws and if you don't answer right away,
she pounds even harder. She curls
up close to me in the stillness of the night.
Any unusual noises in the house or outside and her ears perk up alerting
me by licking my face and standing on my chest until I get up to check things
out. Some nights she sleeps with her paws curled up over her nose
to keep warm and purrs herself to sleep. On
very cold nights she puts her body under my arm for warmth and security.
Dinnertime "Sugar" waits patiently for leftovers.
Her favorite food is spaghetti with spices.
She absolutely loves my spaghetti! She'll
pull the noodles carefully off her plate and lick the spaghetti and spices off
her now very red paw. I also caught
her sneaking into my tall glass of milk when I turned my back.
She carefully dipped her paw into the glass, being very careful not to
draw attention to herself and licked the milk right off her paw.
Another one of "Sug's" (we call her Sug's for short) pronounced
"Shoogs" favorite foods was vanilla yogurt.
When she was a kitten she lived for a bite of yogurt.
When cooked ham is being cut for sandwiches she's right there.
No matter where she is in the house the sound of ham being cut and she
comes running. With her quiet
meows, purrs and rubbing herself at my side it's hard to resist her requests.
One night I heard strange noises in the kitchen.
When I flicked on the lights, there
was "Sugar" opening the cabinets and pulling out
a can of sardines. Out of
all of the cans in the kitchen she grabbed the sardines.
Imagine that! Here's a pure
white cat at night opening my cabinets, pulling out the sardines onto the
counter and then the floor. It was
amazing the agility and speed she has while being sneaky.
I awoke in the morning with a can of sardines next to my bed.
Luckily she hadn't figured out how to open the can!
"Sugar" is fond of playing and can be seen chasing my 6'2 son
around the entire house. He thought
he would sneak up on her and grab her from behind.
She decided to surprise him and chased him frantically right back into
his room. He had to lock his door
to keep her out! "Sug's"
carries a little white fuzzy around the house, which is her favorite toy.
She'll throw it high up into the air and it's one of the funnier things
I've seen her do. Her fuzzy ends up in the most unusual places.
Special moments are when she curls up on my lap getting my undivided
attention. She can also be seen
curled up on the couch into a little ball of white fluff and sleeps in a picture
perfect position. Whenever you are gone she waits patiently in the window
watching for us to return.
In the truck she can be seen standing on the armrest looking out of the
window (her favorite spot!) While
driving down the freeway people smile and stare mistaking her for a small dog.
Her unusual eyes catch their attention and they smile or honk and wave at
her. Kids' just love her and she
tolerates them pretty well. Teenagers
love to chase her and she amazes them with her speed when she chases them back.
She wraps her paws around their ankles and trips them while they are
trying to escape. They leave here
laughing and talking about her for days. It's hard to forget this mystic white cat when you meet her and who knows, she could be the re-incarnation of the Turkish hero "Kemel Ataturk." Whether she is or not, she certainly is a beauty inside and out. When you mix up her pure white silky coat, cups of sweet personality and add some spicy spaghetti, you have a mixture of my favorite Pet "Sugar And Spice!"
