So You Want To Learn About Bugs
Sebastian, did you know that when a bug looks at you it sees a large
number of things? Bugs cannot focus
and cannot tell objects if they're more than a few inches from them.
Ultraviolet light can be seen by most bugs except beetles which are able
to see infrared light. Maybe that's
why we call them "bug-eyed." Pretty
amazing stuff, huh? "Frederico
The Spider" is an arachnid. This
means he has eight spiny legs, no wings to fly, and no antennae.
Pretty neat, huh? Guess what Sebastian, it takes approximately twenty-five
thousand "Frederico's" each spinning their own webs to make just one
pound of web. Wow! That's a lot of hard working spiders!
This is very interesting Sebastian, so listen closely…
Scientists believe there are one to ten million new bug species still to
be found. Why you could even
discover a new bug species right there in your own backyard.
Now how about those busy buzzing wasps.
Sebastian, have you ever watched a wasp sleep? Here's an interesting fact; they bite into the stem of a
plant with their mandibles and stretch out on the stem with their legs dangling
as they sleep. That's one bug we
don't want to wake up! Sebastian,
how do you sleep? Do you sleep like
the wasp and let your legs dangle and stretch out too?
Did you know that the
scientific study of insects is called entomology and a scientist who studies
insects is called an entomologist?
Now you've learned a little
about bugs!

By the way a little
"Frederico" just might end up under your bed covers again if ANTie
Patti comes to visit! Not a real
one of course just a pretend one to make you smile.
Sebastian here is a spider poem I wrote just for you in case "Frederico"
ever comes for a visit.
Frederico The Spider
Why
does the spider cause such a fright?
When you really look closely they are quite a sight.
With all of their legs they can really run fast,
To watch one in action is really a blast.
They watch us from ceilings the wall and the floor,
Why they even know how to crawl out the front door.
Spiders are busy in their web spinning away,
In hopes that some lazy bug crosses his way.
So when you see a spider remember this too,
That very same spider is looking right back at you!
